Hi API lovers, my name is Frédéric Harper, and I’m a new Mashaper. Starting in 2015, I’ll join the fantastic Mashape team as the Head of Developer Relations.
A bit of background
Mashape has been on the road a lot last month, in fact we’ve travelled over 9500 miles collectively to raise awareness around the beautiful world of APIs.
AWS re:Invent 2014
As you might know Amazon organises an annual conference where they announce new Amazon products for the cloud, partnerships and also converges developers from all around the world in a large expo hall. With 13000
sponsors over a period of 3 days who attended the conference, this was the largest conference Mashape has ever attended!

Our first trip started in…
We are an API Hub where over 100,000 developers can consume more than 10,000 APIs. We’ve been building this business for over 3 years, and there are a lot of things that we’ve measured throughout the process which we will be sharing in this post.
Over the past 3 years, we have been working relentless to grow the API community, business and economy. We’ll be sharing some of our key metrics in this post and how we achieved them.
Growth of APIs
In the Mashape API marketplace, we host a variety of APIs which span across distinct categories and use…
Open-Sourcing Mashape’s Guardian. OAuth solved.
At Mashape, we support thousands of APIs. Over the years, we have learned a lot about different authentications and the complex world of OAuth. Today, we are happy to officially release Guardian.js
, the open-source gatekeeper that removes the OAuth dance with a single request.
In the past, the community has shown lots of love and support for our previous open-source projects: OAuthBible
. As we continue to develop new API tools, we’ll continue to share our work with the developer community!
We hope you like it,
The Mashape Team
Get rid of…
Last week, we organized our first API Crafters Meetup since the move to our new office, and it was awesome to see so many people interested in APIs showing up.
Lots of stories were shared during the networking session, and it was heartwarming to hear different war stories and implementations from various perspectives.
The first speaker was Tyler from Klout
. He explained in detail how Klout consumes other APIs to generate data to power their own API, which in turn generates a never-ending loop of data being exchanged between platforms.

Introducing Private Plans – for API Providers and Consumer!
Everyone loves flexibility, (knowimsayinn) but no one admits it!
We’ve successfully deployed Private Plans, a new feature of our Pricing Tab. There is nothing keeping developers away from consuming your public and private APIs, and with this release, we give you a way to charge users in customized ways.
This update is targeted to all our API providers who like to keep things between your API and your consumers a little more interesting. Mashape wants you to be able to provide your customers with a flexible pricing for any use-case.
When it comes to APIs, there’s a lot of jargon out there. The meaning of certain terms isn’t always obvious, and API providers sometimes use different ones to refer to the same thing.
That’s why we created an API glossary
. It contains the terminology we use on our site and in our documentation, as well as related words and common acronyms.
If you’re just starting out with APIs, you can get the foundational knowledge you need to dive right into API use, design, and development.
If you need to explain APIs to a non-technical, instead of mumbling something
On Monday April 7th OpenSSL released an update to address CVE-2014-0160
). This was a vulnerability in the popular cryptographic library that is used to secure many major websites. It affected nearly two thirds of web servers, including sites like Google, Twitter, and Yahoo. Mashape has implemented the update and is no longer vulnerable to potential Heartbleed exploits. We’ve also reissued our SSL certificates, changed internal passwords, and changed private keys.
While we have no evidence that there has been any type of attack or intrusion, we have automatically logged out all users, and for extra security users…
We’re happy to announce a reduced revenue share percentage rate. Going forward monetized APIs will only be charged a 20% revenue share. With ❤.
As always, Mashape will continue to provide free support, quick distribution, analytics, auto generated code snippets, issues and reporting system, status, alerts, testing tools, collaboration and permission add-ons, and many more features.
Looking forward to our continued relationship to build together the API economy!
We know how hard it is to find great APIs. So we built PublicAPIs.com
, an API directory where you can instantly search through thousands of APIs and discover public cloud web services. Here’s what we have waiting for you:
An infinite scrolling list of over 10,000 APIs
